Office of the Bishop

Diocese of Rockville Centre

50 North Park Avenue

Rockville Centre, NY 11570-4184

Dear Pastor,

At the annual fall session of the U.S.C.C.B., the bishops of the United States were given a report about the harsh reality affecting the people of Cuba in the aftermath of Hurricane Michelle. Some of the bishops of Cuba whom I know personally have indicated to me that crops and property were destroyed across the island, but particularly in the area of Matanzas. This is a humanitarian disaster that affects the people who already suffer much because of the political regime under which they live.

Because the Church in the United States has had a long-term relationship with the Church in Cuba, I write to authorize a second collection to give some relief to those who have suffered the devastation of Hurricane Michelle. You may take up this collection whenever you wish between now and the first of February. Please indicate to your people that any monies collected will be given directly to the Church in Cuba and will be distributed to Caritas Cubana which is the Catholic social agency of the bishops of Cuba. In this way, I can assure you that any monies given will reach the intended goal of helping those who are most affected.

Please send your parish's contributions in a check made payable to the Diocese of Rockville Centre and mail to the Office of the Controller, 50 North Park Avenue, Rockville Centre, New York 11570. Please note "Hurricane Michelle Disaster Relief Fund" on the check.

With my prayers and best wishes for a happy and holy Christmas, I am

Yours fraternally in Christ

Most Reverend William Murphy
+ Bishop of Rockville Centre
