Directory of Ministries and Organizations

The primary function of the Baptism Ministry is to help parents prepare for the Baptism of their child. This is accomplished by parents attending a Baptism gathering (class) which is held on the first Thursday of every month at 7:30 PM in the Parish Center. At this time parents are welcomed into our community. We provide instruction on the celebration of the sacrament of Baptism with a film and brief discussion period. We also review guidelines on the selection of godparents. Parents then select an actual date for the Baptism and complete Baptismal cards which are used for creating a Baptismal Certificate.

All parents are contacted again by telephone a few days prior to Baptism Sunday to finalize details/attendance and answer any last minute questions they may have.

Baptisms are celebrated in St. Thomas at 1:30 PM on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of every month in the main church. At least two Baptism Ministry volunteers are present acting as ushers for all attending as seating is pre-arranged by family. Ministry volunteers also assist in processing into the church and act as Readers when needed.

The Baptism Ministry currently has four host couples. They alternate in conducting classes on the first Thursday of every month. Anyone interested in volunteering this for ministry should have group facilitating/meeting skills and feel comfortable speaking in front of a group. We happily provide on-the-job training and Diocesan classes are also available from time to time.

We also have two additional ministry members who volunteer only in the church at the actual Baptism. The requirements for volunteering for "church only" are a cheerful disposition and a willingness to serve others.

The Sacrament of Baptism is a joyful occasion. This ministry provides an opportunity to share our Christian walk of faith with parents who are bringing their children into our faith community. It is a blessing to share in their joy.
